Legionella Awareness Course

Legionella Awareness

Legionnaires disease is a potentially deadly illness that is estimated to kill between 200 and 300 people a year in the UK alone, although the true figure could be much higher, as many cases go undiagnosed.  Legionella bacteria is the leading cause of this disease and has the potential to cause serious harm if left undetected, or not carefully controlled.

Any water system that has the right environmental conditions can become a source of legionella bacteria. Consequently, all premises containing a man-made water system must maintain that system, make sure that the system is safe to use and free from harmful bacteria.

About this Legionella Awareness Course

This training course has been designed to help raise delegates’ awareness to understand where legionella bacteria comes from, and how people potentially develop Legionnaires’ disease.

It will help them understand the health risks associated with legionella bacteria and how to control them.

It is particularly relevant to any workers who have a responsibility for undertaking tasks associated with water systems, such as cleaning, servicing, modification or repair.

Legionella Awareness Course Learning Outcomes

At the end of this session delegates will be aware of:

  1. What is Legionnaire’s disease,
  2. Where to potentially find it,
  3. Symptoms and effects,
  4. The Legislation,
  5. Control measures/regimes.

The course will demonstrate the best ways to examine water systems that could potentially develop the Legionella bacteria, and how to reduce the likelihood of outbreaks.

Legionella Awareness Course Contents

This training course is broken down into 3 sections

1.What is Legionnaires disease

This section gives the delegate an understanding of what Legionnaires Disease is, where it originated, how it got it’s name and the difference between Legionnaires' disease and other forms of legionellosis.

2.Where legionella bacteria are found.

This is where we look at the conditions that promote the growth of legionella bacteria in a water system. From this, we can understand how people can possibly contract Legionnaires’ Disease. We touch on the groups that are most at risk of succumbing to legionellosis.

3.Managing Legionella Risks

This section concentrates on the relevant legal and guidance documents. It covers Dutyholder responsibilities, legionella risk assessments, and an overview of control methods and objectives, including record keeping.
